This is necessary because the surfaces of polymers, metals, ceramics, glass and many types of paper are inherently non-polar or poorly wettable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can lead to poor adhesion results when coating with paints, varnishes, adhesives, etc. The consequences can be a poor print image, a splintering of the paint or a loosening of the bonding. To avoid this, the <\/span><b>surfaces must be prepared before coating<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition, the products cannot be processed until the chemicals have completely dried. <\/span><b>Mechanical pre-treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is time-consuming and not usually compatible with in-line processes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these reasons, the physical processes of corona, plasma or flame pre-treatment under atmospheric pressure are becoming increasingly important. They are cost-effective, compatible with in-line processes, have low operating costs and do not generate waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n                                \r\n                            <\/div>\r\n                            \r\n                        <\/div>\r\n                        \r\n                    <\/div> \r\n                <\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n            <div class=\"row\">\r\n                <div class=\"col-12\">\r\n                    <div class=\"acc-box\">\r\n                        \r\n                        <div class=\"click-area\">                            \r\n                                <h2 class=\"title\">How does physical pre-treatment work?<\/h2>\r\n                                <div class=\"plus\"><\/div>\r\n                        <\/div>\r\n                        \r\n                        <div class=\"content-area  position-left \">\r\n                            \r\n                            <div class=\"content\">\r\n                                <div class=\"text-wrapper\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mode of action of the physical pre-treatment is always based on the <\/span><b>production of a plasma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While this is not thermally generated by an electrical discharge during corona or <\/span><a href=\"\/en\/pretreatment-systems\/plasma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plasma pre-treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a plasma is formed in the hot flame during the flame treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activated molecules and atoms of the plasma are integrated into the plastic surface and generate <\/span><b>polar groups<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there. The paint, varnish or adhesive molecules can bind to these. The effect is an increase in surface tension. Using a silane compound (<\/span><a href=\"\/en\/pretreatment-systems\/flame-treatment\/silica-coating\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arcosil\u00ae process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), very thin silicate layers, only a few nanometres thick, can be produced, which have very good adhesive properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n                                \r\n                            <\/div>\r\n                            \r\n                        <\/div>\r\n                        \r\n                    <\/div> \r\n                <\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n            <div class=\"row\">\r\n                <div class=\"col-12\">\r\n                    <div class=\"acc-box\">\r\n                        \r\n                        <div class=\"click-area\">                            \r\n                                <h2 class=\"title\">How can the success of the pre-treatment be checked?<\/h2>\r\n                                <div class=\"plus\"><\/div>\r\n                        <\/div>\r\n                        \r\n                        <div class=\"content-area  position-left \">\r\n                            \r\n                            <div class=\"content\">\r\n                                <div class=\"text-wrapper\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To check whether the pre-treatment has achieved its goal \u2013 increasing the surface tension \u2013 there are two methods: contact angle measurement and <\/span><a href=\"\/en\/pretreatment-systems\/testing-ink\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">test inks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Test inks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have a defined surface tension. For testing, simply apply a line of ink to the pre-treated substrate. If the surface tension of the test ink matches that of the substrate, the line will neither contract or spread. This test can be carried out at specific points or over a large area, with the test surface stationary or in motion. The <\/span><b>accuracy of this method<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is +\/-1.0\u00a0mN\/m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even more accurate results can be achieved with a <\/span><b>contact angle measurement <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the laboratory. All four physical processes (corona, plasma, flame and silica coating) are equally suitable for the <\/span><b>pre-treatment of common plastics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PP, PE, PA, PMMA, ABS, PC, etc.). In practice, the choice of the best pre-treatment method is usually determined by <\/span><b>external circumstances<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
